Philistines: the history of the cryptids
After my one-month stay in Israel is now, of course, the scientific analysis of all, and all my discoveries in the program. For this purpose I'll write a paper among others, dealing in particular with the historical reconstruction of the so-called charging narrative (1 Samuel 4 to 7.1). Another very exciting area is still the question of the origin and exact origin of the Philistines.
The Bible itself is then already one of the most important information: in Jeremiah 47.4 and Amos 9.7 is called respectively "Caphtor" as the original home of the Philistines. Philological considered here a striking similarity with the Egyptian word "Kefitu" which called Crete and thus fit well to the said Jeremiah body would, as these "Caphtor" specifically an "island" called.
In contrast, the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament (created around the 3rd century. BC.), Is that Hebrew word "Cappadocia" played. It is questionable, however, how reliable this translation in the case of the books of Samuel at all is because between the so-called Masoretic text (the Hebrew Old Testament) and the Septuagint in this case are some major differences, so lacking about the famous story of David and Goliath in the last version completely.
are considered archaeologically, however, the strong parallels between Mycenaean and Philistine culture is unmistakable, so can at least say this much: the Philistines came to almost certainly out of the Aegean. And even more: the archaeological and historical findings - for example, contain the Amarna letters about the so-called Sea Peoples, which included the Philistines - let the Conclusion that the Philistines as the 12th Century. BC in the Levant, that is the coast of present-day Israel, settled.
This is the question now: why they came about?
At that time held, Mediterranean migrations were not only the Philistines, but as the "Sardana" (possibly from Sardinia), the "Sekeles" (possibly from Sicily) and involved many other nations. Such a change in the entire Mediterranean region concerned almost epochal significance was therefore probably only the finale of a development which was due to any circumstances likely to start much earlier.
The reconstruction of these circumstances is just still one of the great mysteries of archeology. And here is an admittedly unconventional, not to say pseudo-scientific, yet bold idea into play: Since
Heinrich Schliemann discovered Troy in 1873 is well known that the Homeric writings is entirely attributed a certain historical accuracy. Therefore, even today still looking for the remains of the legendary Atlantis. The process here is relatively simple: one compares the description in Homer with the existing archaeological remains. However, it should be noted here that it is Homer's description is a quote in the citation, he even check the accuracy of this representation is not so could, and the earliest text fragments of the same ages are younger than the alleged original. One hundred percent accuracy is not likely to improve in Homer, but some of the descriptions, such as the ARE OF situated in the sea, ring-shaped city of Atlantis and its destruction in about 16 Century. BC (provided in the cases mentioned by Homer years, it is actually months), also on the Aegean island of Santorini. That suggest that his was caused by a volcanic eruption sinking, a traumatic event must also scale archaeological artifacts completely from other sites, such as the Sky Disc of Nebra, or Stonehenge. Both were in fact after centuries of use, suddenly and without discernible, local property abandoned. This could have been an effect caused by the eruption of the volcano climate change. Is that supposed to mean
now that the destruction of Santorini was the catalyst for many years later held Migration and the Philistines in the end even the descendants of the Atlanteans were?
Well, that would be probably used a bit far. But a lively exchange between the ancestors of the Philistines and the Minoans or Atlanteans (if this is the same people) that are probable and suggests may be in technical progress against the Philistines, the Israelites down from the previously reported in the Bible (1 Samuel 13.19-22) and this year by the discovery of bronze and iron slag at Tell es-Safi is confirmed. Now I
must confess that this, my hypothesis is not the first to try to bring Atlantis and Philistia name. Jürgen Spanuth, a classical scholar and Lutheran theologian claimed that even with the Philistines themselves it was Atlantis, which although not originally from Santorini, it originated from the vicinity of Helgoland. Compared to such adventurous my theories but probably at least the first that has a certain archaeological and historical basis.
on comment I'm curious.
